Platform Strategy & Migration

Fabric is an operating model, not just another tool.

Most enterprise data architectures struggle not from a lack of tooling, but from architectural fragmentation: ingestion in ADF, storage in ADLS Gen2, transformation in Databricks or Synapse, and reporting in Power BI—each with duplicate copies, separate security models, and runaway compute bills.

Microsoft Fabric unifies this complete lifecycle into OneLake. DAVIZ Solutions architects your Fabric environment from tenant setup and domain boundaries down to Delta optimization, Direct Lake semantic modeling, and automated Purview data governance.

Connect AWS S3, Google Cloud Storage, Azure Data Lake, and Dataverse into one virtual data mesh without data movement, custom replication pipelines, or egress fees.

Eliminate import data latency. Power BI queries Parquet files directly from OneLake storage with VertiPaq-level memory speed, bypassing 48-time daily refresh limits.

Define Row-Level Security, sensitivity labels, column masking, and access rights once at the OneLake level, enforced consistently across Spark, SQL, and Power BI.

Data engineers code in PySpark notebooks, SQL specialists write T-SQL queries in the Warehouse, and business analysts build Power BI dashboards—all in one SaaS interface.

Consolidate disparate compute budgets into single F-SKU capacity pools with burstable smoothing, pause/resume automation, and tenant-wide workload isolation.

Power BI Direct Lake semantic model

Power BI Direct Lake: In-Memory Speed on Billion-Row Datasets

Direct Lake is the groundbreaking connection mode exclusive to Microsoft Fabric. It loads Parquet files directly from OneLake into the Power BI VertiPaq engine in memory—providing the real-time freshness of DirectQuery with the blazingly fast calculation performance of Import mode, completely eliminating extract pipeline overhead.

Architecture Evolution

Traditional Cloud Data Stack vs.
Modern Microsoft Fabric.

See how unifying storage, compute, and governance into Microsoft Fabric fundamentally alters development speed, data freshness, and maintenance overhead.

Architecture Dimension Legacy Disjointed Stack (ADF + Databricks + Synapse + BI) Modern Microsoft Fabric (OneLake Lakehouse)
Data Storage ✕ Siloed — Multiple proprietary copies across DBs, blob storage, and dataset caches ✓ OneLake — Single copy in open Delta Lake Parquet format accessed by all tools
Power BI Connection ✕ Scheduled Refresh — Data imported into memory; max 48 refreshes/day with latency ✓ Direct Lake — Direct in-memory VertiPaq reads from Delta files with live freshness
Security & RLS ✕ Duplicated — Separate ACLs in data lake, SQL database, and Power BI service ✓ Unified Purview — Single security boundary enforced across Spark, T-SQL, and BI
Compute Provisioning ✕ Fragmentation — Over-provisioned dedicated compute pools sitting idle ✓ Shared F-SKU — Dynamic workload smoothing across ETL, Spark, SQL, and Dashboards
Multi-Cloud Access ✕ Expensive Replication — Costly pipelines and egress charges copying AWS S3 / GCP ✓ OneLake Shortcuts — Virtual pointer integration without copying bytes
AI & Copilot Integration ✕ Complex Setup — Custom vector pipelines and third-party connector configuration ✓ Native Fabric Copilot — Turn-key AI assistance for DAX, SQL, notebooks, and exploration

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything You Need to Know
About Microsoft Fabric.

A Fabric Lakehouse stores data in open Delta Lake Parquet format and is optimized for file-based data engineering using Apache Spark, Python, and Scala, along with ad-hoc SQL querying. A Fabric Warehouse provides a full enterprise relational database experience with standard T-SQL, ACID transactions, complex stored procedures, and fine-grained column/row permissions. In Fabric, both write to OneLake, meaning Spark and SQL share the exact same underlying data without ETL replication.

Import mode copies data into Power BI memory and requires scheduled refreshes (capped at 48x/day in Premium/Fabric). DirectQuery passes SQL queries directly to the source database with zero data copying, but is frequently slow and compute-heavy. Direct Lake combines the best of both: it reads Parquet data files directly from OneLake into the VertiPaq memory cache at lightning speed, delivering real-time freshness without running expensive SQL queries or scheduling dataset refreshes.

We execute a risk-mitigated phased migration. Because Azure Data Factory pipelines share the same underlying JSON structure as Fabric Data Factory, existing pipelines and Dataflows can be ported or recreated rapidly. Azure Data Lake Storage (ADLS) containers can be linked into OneLake immediately via Shortcuts without moving a single gigabyte, allowing you to run new Fabric workloads side-by-side with your existing estate during transition.

Fabric uses a unified capacity model (F2 through F2048). Rather than paying separately for ADF integration, Databricks compute, Synapse pools, and Power BI licenses, all workloads draw compute units (CUs) from one shared F-SKU. Fabric features automatic smoothing, which averages burst compute spikes over 24 hours to prevent throttling, and capacities can be paused during non-business hours to minimize cloud spend.

Yes. Fabric OneLake Shortcuts natively connect to Amazon Web Services (AWS) S3 buckets, Google Cloud Storage (GCS), and external Azure Data Lake accounts. Shortcuts appear as virtual Delta tables within your Fabric Lakehouse, allowing your analytics teams to query and join cross-cloud datasets in seconds without building custom extraction pipelines or incurring heavy egress fees.
